    General electrical problem I think?....

My '92 Ski Nautique has been in storage for a few years. I'm pulling it out to try and actually use it again now. I've replaced the battery, changed the oil, and replaced the water pump impeller. The engine seems to be running quite well on the trailer pumping water from a bucket. So far so good! The alternator seems to be putting out almost 14 volts when running. I forget the exact number now but I remember thinking it seemed good at the time.

I noticed the fuel gauge not moving at all with about a half tank of gas. I read some posts here I think about that, so I tried touching the positive connection from the fuel sender to the ground on the fuel sender to see if it would spike to full. At first, nothing. After trying a few more times in slightly different spots, it did spike to full. My thought there was dirty connectors maybe?, so I lightly sanded down the connectors of the positive and ground and hooked it back up and it seemed to work for a while. I'm not sure if that is the proper thing to do though or not... Initially I thought I was good.

The next day, the fuel gauge was back to not working at all again. Then I noticed my navigation lights didn't work. Also noticed the more accessory switches on the dash that I turned on (even if they weren't running anything) the dash switch lights got progressively more dim and the horn would get progressively more quiet as well, although it does start out loud initially.

I'm wondering if this sounds like anything specific perhaps? Let me know if you might want more info.... I'd be happy to provide it. It feels to me like I may need to just rewire the whole boat, but maybe that's a little excessive as I'm not sure I want to take that on.

The good news is the engine seems to start and run great, so I at least have that in my back pocket.... I think I'm ok to use it during the day as long as I keep an eye on my fuel consumption, though I admit I'm not entirely sure as it would be nice to get it all straightened out it possible.

Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated if possible..

    Thanks!

At nearly 30 YO and an extended storage period I would be looking at cabling as well. Not so sure I would jump into a complete rewire but I would certainly start at the battery and replace the primary ground and positive cables. While doing so clean all connections. From there it would be time to "nut and bolt" all connections going from the battery to the dash. You should have bus bars in the dash area which I would spend some time on inspecting, cleaning and securing all the connections.

Grounding with boats can be an issue even with newer boats so to think you may have a problem here with this older boat certainly would not be a stretch. The good news is that this really isn't an expensive exercise. The bad new is that it can be labor intensive and is typically something that is preformed in tight, hard to get to places within the boat.

There is some great advice above. If battery cables look ok upon inspection, I'd check the ground strap and clean up that connection as in interim step before replacing the cables. I am not positive where it is located on direct drives but I would guess it is bolted on the engine cradle like it is is on 90s V Drives.

Thanks for the comments guys. Much appreciated. I am glad to hear it may not be too expensive, so that’s good. I admit I’m not looking forward to the hard to get to spaces though. Ha! Hopefully I should be able to say this was a fun project when it’s all done. If anyone else has any other feedback, I’m all ears. Thanks guys!

As a side note, holy cow, it’s 30 years old. I hadn’t really put that together until you mentioned that. It may have been more of a realization or my own age after realizing the age of the boat. Ha!

        Thanks again. Cheers!
