    2004 196 ski Excalibur 330 throttle issue

From reading forum, I have an idea, but interested in everyone’s thoughts…

2004 Ski 196 Excalibur 330. Boat had a dead battery on Thursday, replaced it and boat ran great most of the day. Then Thursday evening, while driving to marina at about 20mph, noticed a smell of burning plastic/rubber. Opened the engine cover and small amount of smoke came out…smell was clearly from engine area. Temp gauge was perfect. Thought maybe it was impeller or clogged water intake. Changed impeller and cleaned out intake filter. Boat ran great the rest of the evening and Friday morning. Then Friday afternoon, after 30 min of skiing, we sat in a cove for 30 min to swim. Boat idled just fine. As we were leaving the cove, accelerating smoothly, at about 15mph, the boat sort of stalled. It was a momentary loss of acceleration. Backed off the throttle, and tried accelerating again and it repeated the behavior. So we driver slowly for a few minutes (5mph). After a few min, we very slowly accelerated to 20mph without issue. The problem occurred a few more times, but is very inconsistent. Otherwise the boat is running smoothly. All of this was with the perfect pass turned off.

    Couple of thoughts.

What's the voltage when running? Is the alternator charging. Was the smoke from the alternator?

When's the last time the distributor cap and rotor were changed? Possibly the cause of not running well.

The smoke and the not running will may not actually be related.

Thanks for the response. The distributor cap and rotor have not been replaced since I have owned the boat (2015). The voltage/alternator could be an issue. The dash gauge is reading 11 volts with a brand new battery. No idea of the source of smoke, it was just enough to notice when the engine cover was lifted and it only happened once.

the other ideas I had were TPS possibly bad or a faulty fuel pump (prob low-pressure).

With boat off, I get 11.95 volts at batter terminal. With boat running, blower, lights and radio on, engine at 2,000 rpm…I get 11.4 volts at battery terminal. That not great! I guessing alternator is failing??

I'll bet smoke was from alternator. Put your nose to it, see how it smells. Get it tested or replace it. Check wires from alternator and battery for heat damage.
Also time for a full tune - plugs, wires, cap, rotor, filters if no maintenance since 2015!

To better monitor my battery voltage on my 2004 206, I installed something like this in the dash.

            https://www.amazon.com/YonHan-Charge.../dp/B07FXH5ZZK

Installs in the factory 'cigarette lighter power port' on the upper right hand side of the dash.

Really like it - simple way to monitor my battery voltage when floating and when running.

Thanks Rednucleus! I change plugs and filters yearly. Just not sure if the cap / rotor have been replaced...looking thru yearly maintenance records. If no record, will get that done this offseason. I also have a new alternator and fuel control cell / pump to install.
