2002 Ski clicking on start (more)

Soooo.. My 2002 ski 196, 330 Excalibur.. I took the boat out and while filling up the tube (I Know, I know) the boat just died. started it up, plugged in the air into 12V and died again. this happened a couple times... then no start. (click, click).... checked all cords and battery with meter.. I suspect the solenoid.. The odd thing is. when i enter the code and hit start it clicks and the gages all work for the time I press the start button. then nothing.. No click, no gages after hitting the start again.... until I put my code in again and hit start.. same thing. Usually i put in the code, hit start and the gages work. hit start again to start it.. does this make any sense?? before I dig deeper.. the whole gages not working is confusing me..

Sounds like my 2002.. I believe it is the battery cables. Mine seems to be an issue at the fuse holder which is near the positive battery terminal connection.

the keypads do go bad on that generation 196, and they often exhibit weird electrical issues when they do. I accidently bent the connector pins on the back of my old 196’s keypad and it caused the boat to shut off from doing things like hitting the horn.

I would agree with the battery cables / terminals. It is very likely that if they are original, there is corrosion going up the cables from the terminal ends. You may not be able to see it. Try moving the cables around a bit at the battery and see if that helps. If it does, plan to replace the cables. I have done this on numerous boats of this era, and it makes a big difference.

hmmmm.. I wonder if I can bypass (hot wire) the dash ignition to test it.. That sort of sounds like whats going on..

NautiqueJeff.. I did check voltage at the starter and it read 12.6V But, i guess that doesn't mean its sending enough when I hit the start button..

How to bypass the keypad is beyond my skill set/experience. Replacing the battery cables is probably cheaper than replacing the keypad, which are like $500, so I would start with the cables and make sure you don’t have any loose connections anywhere.
