92' Sport Trouble- Voltage Is High & Breaker Tripping

While on the water over the weekend, a pop sound was heard followed by total loss of power (electrical). THis is my friends boat, and we got towed in and trailered it. Found the breaker buttons behind the motor, only one needed resetting. Put it back on the water.

Same thing happens next morning. Noticed that the voltage gauge was well over 16 and the breaker tripped at about 2600 RPM after about 1 minute. Reset it and cruised for a while at minimal speed, Voltage still high, so we took it in. Went back out and took it up to 2600 RPM and Pop, tripped again after a minute or so. Reset it. And trolled back to the mooring. Noticed that the voltage was back down to around 12-1/2. Trailered it and came home Sunday.

THis is the PCM Boss GT40 5.8L Carbed. We are thinking it is either the Alternator, Voltage Regulator, Or both. The Battery never died. Wondering if anyone has experienced this and how it was fixed. Also, is the regulator built in to the Alternator?? Hopefully just replacing these will be the fix. Boat has about 280 hrs on it. Thanks in advance. :?

Sound like your alternator is shorting out to pop the breaker. The alternator has a built in regulator. Have your alternator tested.
