    GS20 Clunking in Reverse

    Hi all,

I have a 2020 GS20 and am experiencing intermittent clunking/loud clicking noises when I put the boat in reverse. Sounds like it is coming from the veedrive. Any ideas what it could be? Sounds really bad.

You don't mention age or hours of the boat but one likely culprit would be the damper plate. Past that, you're into the gear box (vDrive) or trans. Typically with the damper plate you'll hear a rattling of it it's completely come apart n noise like someone threw a bunch of nuts and screws into a coffee can and started shaking it.

Now one other culprit I ran into years ago was a prop that wasn't proper installed and had backed off about 2" of play on the shaft. When you put the boat in reverse the prop would slam back in the seated position. Got lucky on that one and happened to notice it when inspecting the strut bearings as you could feel it in the drivetrain which lead us to the back of the boat.
