I have a new to me 2014 G23. It has the XR 550 engine with the 1:48:1 transmission. Currently I have the engine out for a rebuild and I noticed that there is a 2:1 transmission available locally. I've read most of the threads on this site regarding the 2:1 but I'm still not quite sure if it is worth picking up this transmission and swapping out my 1:48:1 for the 2:1 when paired with the XR 550. I know Nautique switched the XR 550 over to the 2:1 in 2016, but it also had plenty of power with the 1.48:1. I am interested in knowing if I switch to the 2:1 and change props if I can make the boat better on gas or if it is better to stick with the 1:48:1 for that. I currently have a 2008 210 and it is so good on gas and I've read a lot on here about how the XR 550 just loves the gas, so I'm a bit worried.
I haven't been able to use the boat yet as the engine was in need of repair when I got it. I also have no experience in or behind a G23, so I'm looking for opinions. It would be nice to swap the transmission now while I have everything out. I live in UT and will operate the boat typically 4200ft but could but down to 2000ft or up to 6000ft. We primarily wakeboard but also surf quite a bit. I don't think we will ever use more than the stock ballast in this boat. I am riding much slower now, only about 20 mph and find the stock ballast in the 210 to be sufficient most of the time for both wakeboarding and surfing.
