This spring I bought a 94 Ski Nautique (717 hours) with a carbureted 351w, and the original ProTec ignition reverted to a PerTronix distributor. Per PCM it was 240 Hp in the original configuration. The previous owner told me the boat was “cold-blooded” and needed a long time to warm-up. The boat ran okay at idle & speed, but I spent the summer chasing a hesitation on acceleration from a stop, particularly when getting a skier up. I confirmed the timing @ 10° before TDC, replaced the fuel filter, rebuilt the carb & fixed a significant vacuum leak in the PCV hose. This work improved but did not eliminate the hesitation.
Yesterday I did a compression test (warm) and got 95 psi on #1, and 98 to 100 psi on cylinders 2~8. I found some of the plugs had oil on them. I know none of this is good news, but my question is whether I should focus on the low compression as the lead suspect in the hesitation.
I figure there’s a rebuild in my future, but thought I’d get some group input first. Thx!
