    Weird Noise - Damage - Possibly from Overheating - Advise

    Hi, I have a 2012 230 Super Air Nautique (engine ZR409 - VDrive). A couple of days ago I was testing my boat and got overheated. I got first the warning message DTC-116 ECT Higher than expected stage 1 and a couple of minutes later the warning message DTC 1418 - EMWT2 Higher than expected stage 2. I turned off the engine and pulled it out of the water (it had a little of smell of something burned). I replaced the impeller which was deteriorated and tested the boat again.
    Now the engine runs fine at idle speed and maintains a normal temperature of 165 F (it does not overheats). However, if I accelerate (i.e at 5 or 6 mph) I got a weird noise first and eventually the engine stops running. I even tested the engine accelerating in neutral speed and the result is similar.
    I am concerned something was damaged and I`d appreciate any advise of what parts should we inspect or replace after something like this ?

    Need a little more information, such as a recording of the noise, to give descent advice. The problem can be so many things from the results of an overheat. Especially since you got the stage 2 overheat error. Stage 1 won't typically cause damage. Stage 2 typically does cause damage.

    But one thing that comes to mind and is pretty common on an overheat, is the inner lining of the rubber exhaust hoses have melted and detached. When that happens, sometime it'll be ok at idle, but as soon as you get a little more exhaust flow, the detached linings will pull into the exhaust stream and block up the exhaust. The back pressure will then cause the engine to shut down. In any case, taking the rubber hoses off and inspecting them is something that should be done after a significant overheat. This is also consistent with a burning smell.

        Jpwhit, thanks very much for your advice. Your thoughts were correct. 2 of the exhaust hoses were damaged. One was burned on the inside, and on the larger one the inner lining of the rubber was melted and detached. And as you said, the detached linings were pulling into the exhaust stream blocking up the exhaust (see pictures below). Thanks again for the advise, it helped me a lot!!!
