Sunk GS22 Restoration Question about Ignition System

Good Morning PN,

As title says I am in the process of bringing back a partially sunk GS22 i have had the boat for about a week now and have successfully “pickled” the engine. Without getting into all the details. Im wondering if anyone can confirm that the ECU controls the coil packs/firing order. I am to the point where the boat is priming turning over and giving a few dtc codes via the linc display (none that would affect starting) one is low ref signal for tcp sensor. Ive purchased a few in line spark plug lights and im just not getting any sort of firing from spark plugs. There is no dist cap to my knowledge the engine is the PCM H5 ive scoured the internet for answers hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. I have ordered a new ECM from my local dealer (Buxton) but the one that is currently in it is providing data via the link screen diagnostics. I have replaced all relays and im getting proper voltage to relay. Thanks

Was told the diacom is only good if the engine is running.

That’s not correct. Diacom is by far the best tool for working on marine engines. Especially newer engines with eControls ECU. But with that said, don’t expect it to tell you what’s wrong. It provides a lot of raw data, but to make use of that data you need to have a pretty deep understanding of how modern engine control systems work. You need to have a good understanding of what is normal and expected. It’s always good IMO to use Diacom to really understand how everything behaves on a working engine before you try and figure out what’s not right on a non-working engine.

A low reference for the TCP can definitely keep an engine from starting. Because it can cause the ECU to think the throttle lever is fully open. That’ll put the ECU in flooded clear mode.

What led you to buy a new ECU? The ECUs are very well sealed. So I wouldn’t expect it to be the most likely part damaged by water.

Jp id love to pick your brain, im swapping a few other parts this week, was told by buxton that tcp is a common failing part on these newer boats so i have that ordered. Im going to go ahead and do coils and wires for peace of mind even though low ref signal could be the cause for no start. That should be resolved once new module arrives. I am also with you on the ecu being good. But prior to discovering the fuse was bad that powered the ecu i was getting no power to the rear end (engine) so went ahead and ordered one. I dont believe it is condemned and i am still able to return new one to my dealer ( haven't taken delivery yet) if i cant boat to fire this week i will be taking to buxton for diacom read. Im fairly savy in the operation of an engine so reading the data shouldn't be to confusing. I was just told that diacom is useless without a running engine.
