We just purchased a 2004 196 Limited - Gateway is fine. I am hoping to figure out if there is a way to use the speed signal off the factory installed PP paddlewheel to get the Speedometer to work after the pitot to the Gateway is disconnected.
My understanding is Nautique started taking the speed signal off the paddlewheel in 2005. Comparing the 2004 & 2005 Gateway diagrams from the Faria manuals, the P14 connector is dedicated to the paddlewheel on the 2005 Gateway and the pitot inputs marked P8 & P10 on the 2004 Gateway have been removed.
What I am wondering is if anyone has tried to modify a 2004 Gateway so it can accept the paddlewheel signal instead of the pitot signal.
As far as I can tell, the same Speedometer’s are used in 2004 and 2005, so it seems if I could replicate whatever is being done to accept the paddlewheel signal in the 2005 Gateway, I would be able to generate the proper signal with the 2004 Gateway to get the Speedometer back?
Having read through the many posts it seems my only other options are to either accept a dead speedometer (if I want to retain the rest of the functionality of the factory gauge) or to replace the speedometer with one of the aftermarket GPS based options (and lose the factory functionality of the original gauge). I checked with Nautic Laugic and their GPS kits don’t appear to be compatible with our 2004 gauge.
Just seems like there has got to be a way to modify the older Gateway to accept the paddlewheel signal…
