Fuel Cell Canister stuck/won't unscrew: 2000 Air Nautique

I'd posted a while back about my 2000 Air Nautique running rough. I got some great advice to change plugs, wires, cap/rotor and fuel filter. I've gotten everything changed but the fuel filter and now the boat is running great - so thank you!

However, I couldn't get the fuel cell canister to unscrew so that I could change the filter. I even tried putting a metal oil filter wrench on it which broke before loosening the canister. Any other suggestions on how to get it to unscrew?

Big-a$$ pipe wrench. BIG. Works every time. Wrap duct tape around the FCC to help mitigate scratches.

To add to Jonny Quest info... I also found it much easier to remove the canister from the boat and put the assembly in a bench vice while using a big pair of channel locks or pipe wrench. Much more room to work and really put some torque on it, plus not spilling gas all over the bilge.

If/when you get it apart, lube the o-ring with some light oil and add some anti-seize to the threads of the canister so it will be easier to disassemble in the future.

Thanks for the responses! I don't have a bench vice, though I guess I need to get one eventually. If I use a pipe wrench on it while it's still attached to the boat, is there any chance of damaging something? ie, bending the hanger or tearing it out of the block, etc?

I'm tempted to not take it apart since the boat is running so smooth right now and boating season is starting here.

The FCC mounting assembly is very solid. I have an aluminum 36" pipe wrench from H.F. I had to pull hard to get my FCC to unscrew. No worries. No issues. Just lube up the threads when you re-install to make the next time easier.
