    2 problem of my GT-40

My 2001 SAN can keep the hull keep very nice,(exept the scratch i made), I still want to use, it for more years, but 2 proplem bother me recently, 1) start quick when engine cool,(below 100F aprxm.) after temp raise to operation (160F), need press the start botton for a while(3-4-5-6 sec),to start the engine, quite different cool and hot.
    2) idle not steady, when return throttle to neutral, RPM will range 5-600-1000, most time is on 1000, if I adjust the idle to lower RPM,say 650-700, easy stop, I have some trouble for pickup skier.
may be some body experience this and I'll appreciate if advice given.

RE: 2 problem of my GT-40

Is your GT 40 with Carberator or Fuel injection. I would guess Carb. The hadrd start sounds like vaporlock. The other sticking throttle. I would try spraying Carberator cleaner into the carb when runnung. Also I would check the choke is all the way open when the engine is hot. If Fuel injected it sounds like the idle valve? motor is corroded .

My GT-40 is EFI , does EFI has vapour lock? If yes any way to confirm and solve? The throttle linkage I had disaemble and put it back when I pull out the engine last winter for maintaince,I heard that will made engine stall if not install properly,I had recheck that but don’t find wrong, my guess the not steady idle and linkage matching(throttle & trans.) will be the reason but not yet have idea to solve.

          transmission cable

          Richard,
get a new transmission cable, $45.00. I had the same problem in my 2001 san, hard starting on my pushbutton pad, until finally it wouldnt start. The tranny cable broke inside itself so the transmission wouldnt go into neutral, wouldnt start etc. etc. it has an indent so the transmission switch will let the boat start on the pad.

          Mike
          check your cable.
if it is, I will tell you the secrets on replacing it.

            Problems of my GT-40 EFI

M3fan: I had checked IAC valve, the solenoid will move little bit,not obviousely, seems within 4mm while RPM changes from 2500-700, I connected a 12V bold to the connector, variable dim light can see when change RPM, I cleaned the filter as well no help.

Mike-d, I had suspect the throttle linkage install not poperly, But I think not steady idle has some reason else.

I had touch my finger to the hose between valve cover(engine oil inlet cap side) and flame arrestor, I remove the hose (flame arrestor side) and cover with my finger, when accelarate,I fell the air suck my finger,(vaccum), it seems wrong here,it should let air out only? but not sure is the reason or not.
