    Hull repair needed??

I am looking at a 98 Sport Nautique that has some hull chips. The owner told me that he anchored it and it bounced into some rocks. The chips are about the size of a quarter and are on the bottom of the hull. There is also a foot long scratch in the black area of the gelcoat just below the rub rail.

How difficult (read: and expensive) are these to have repaired?

    thanks,

Accurate estimating is difficult to do seeing the boat in person, even more so with words only. Call shops local to your area, and maybe you might be able to get a deal becuse it is still early season, and they might not be busy, yet. Do not delay

I'd look into your local CC Reg office. They would be the best at reparing it and probably offer you the best advice as well. As for the scratch, is it in the gelcoat or a surface scratch from a dock or something? If it's that you could get some wax or acetone and possibly take it right out.

The scratch looks to me to be about gel coat deep and appears to be whitish in color. It may even diappear (since it's on black) by just hitting it with a sharpie pen.. ?? Just a thought.

The problem you are going t have is color. Black is the hardest color to match. A good shop can do it, but it is hard.

I have had some chips fixed in my gel coat. I had two spots where the bow roller and a support roller chipped the gel coat theu a few layers. It was neat seeing the rainbow of colors and how each gel coat color was applied over the last color. Reminded me of a Gobstopper.

A big part of how expensive it is will be how deep the scratches are. If the chip/nicks are more than 1/8" deep, it's probably exposed the fiberglass - if this is the case it definitely needs to be fixed since water will propigate the damage over time, probably hard to tell if your that far down since your hull color is black as well. Having had some minor getcoat work done myself I would guess it will be atleast several hundred, if not more...

Actually, the hull color is white. The top "stripe" color on the sides is black.
