    Surface rust on engine....need advice

This last weekend I noticed some surface rust on my exhaust manifolds - just little brown/red spots so nothing deep. I bought the boat last summer so it's now a salt water boat. I flush the engine out after every go and started using salt away towards the end of last season. I didnt do anything to the externals of the engine though to protect it. I havent had it out for a couple months now and im just worried......I want to make sure that I do anything I acn do to take care of it. Any suggestions? Should I sand the rust that I can see? then spray it with that T9? Any advice will help!! Thanks

    Surface rust on engine

WHEN I SEE RUST ON ANY PART OF THE ENGINE,I WILL TERMINATE IT BY BRUSH IT AWAY AND SPRAY PAINT TO COVER IT IF THER E ARE REACHABLE, SO WHEN I OPEN THE ENGINE COVER IT LOOKS BETTER.IF SALT IS FIND,FLUSH AWAY WITH FRESH WATER CAREFULY,SUNSHINE AND LET DRY OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT IS MY WAY TO REDUCE RUST OF THE MOTOR.

Blast it and get some PCM black paint on there with some oven time.
How 'bout a little reverse action...

WD40 is water soluable (hense not the best thing to use in a marine environment).. Better if you use a marine silicon spray.

I have a little surface rust on the underside of my manifolds that has been there since purchased the boat when it was ten years old. My instinct was to paint over it, but on advice of two marine mechanics, I just gave it a good once over with a wire bruch and left it alone (save for some regular silicone lubricant sprayings). Granted, I have a freshwater boat, but what I have doesn't appear to have gotten any worse in the four years I've owned my boat.

From another source, I was told that to really get things corrected, the spots need to be treated and "powdercoated with ceramic high heat powder like is used on race car, street car headers."

Another product that I have seen recommended is this one www.por15.com

Good luck with it however you decide to approach it.

I would say if it really bugs you, just knock the big stuff off, and hit it with the rust converting primers. They only problem is you need to find a high heat primer that also converts the rust. If you just paint over it, you are just encapsulating it, and it can still grow.

I just leave it alone on my boat, but there is not much rust on the engine in my case.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to get some rust cleaner from west marine and after knocking off as much rust as i can and spray it with that boeing T9. I'm going to do a little more research on it too....maybe call correct craft in orlando since they installed the new engine before I bought it. see what they suggest. Theres alot of horror stories out there with salt and inboard sport boats so it freaked me out! I'll still take any other advice out there!
