Rub rail protection

Does anyone have advice on how to remedy a few scuffs on my rub rail? As best as I can tell, the scuffs are caused by the boat rubbing against the carpeted dock when waiting for the next skier. I've heard that acetone will get rid of the scuffs--but that sounds very extreme. Any ideas?

This is driving me crazy. When I got the boat, it was perfect, now I have a few scuffs already. If my kids thought I was the Nautique Nazi before, just wait until the next time someone touches the gunwale with a shoed foot.

I use 3M's silcate sand polish. But my boat is 14 years old!

Acetone works great. I wouldn't hesitate to use it all all. I use it on the rubrail and the gelcoat. Just use it sparingly.

use the minimalist aproach.


try wax first. if that does not take it out, try polishing compound. if that does not work, try rubbing compound, ect. work your way back to wax when you find the least abrasive compound that will take them out.

stepping on the boat with shoes is grounds for being thrown in on my brothers boat.

indoor/outdoor will scratch gel. i like old berber carpet, but that will scratch just the same. cotton or rubber dock padding would be scratch free, but i just use type iv flopped over the side of the boat.

do teach the kids about not putting their fingers between the dock and the boat rule (or two boats). they will do it anyway, but warn them that it's gonna hurt.

What I have used that works well, is Meguires products. To get out small surface blemishes, use their boat and RV polish. It will get out small imperfections and give it the wet look. It is also what I use as a polish before I wax it. For more stubborn marks, I use their heavy duty color restorer. Also from Meguires. When you are done with that, use the polish to brings back the wet look, then wax since the polish does not protect. The main thing is take your time, you don't want to take off any more gelcoat then you have to.
