Can you give us more details, maybe a schematic on how you wired it and what switch you are using?

I took the wire coming from the starter relay and connected it to the common on switch, then took the pos. from batt. 1 and connected it to #1 post on switch, then took the pos. from batt. 2 and connected it to the #2 post on switch. For the ground i used a jumper from batt. 1 to batt. 2 ground

Well, it definitely looks like you have it wired correctly. Given that it works fine on #2 and ALL, I would just re-check your connections at the switch and battery for #1. Hopefully I'm not insulting you when I ask if the #1 battery has a charge? If there are no problems there, you might just have a faulty switch.

at the time of installation i put 2 new batts. in , when it didn't work i put a new relay in and took the first switch back to woody at south east correct craft in orlando and got a new switch and had it tested. connections are solid. and i am not insulted at all i have been asking myself the same basic ?'s over and over again. I am stumped. any thing else i can try?

once the boat is started i can turn to the dead position and it will run the boat but in that position i can't start the boat or run the stereo.

I'm pretty muched stumped here. The next thing I would do (if you have a multimeter) is to check the connections on the switch to make sure you're getting power.
