HELP-EXCALABUR 330 OVERHEATING

A friend of mine has an 04 Ski with the 330
Excalabur engine, approx 150 hrs. On the trailer, in the water, it will run 175 degrees all day long. Manifolds are just warm to touch, so I know it is getting water.

After running for approx. 10 min on the lake, heated up and went into limp mode

Impeller has about 30 hrs on it, same for thermostat. You can see water flowing thru the RW strainer. The boat has not been run much since mid last summer. Lines and strainer have been checked for air leaks. I am more of a Ford guy and know little about the Chevys.

Anybody got any ideas before I start tearing into this? Any help would be appreciated.

Check the impeller, again, it's quick and easy. If it runs dry just once it can burn the blades causing it to lose it's ability to prime. If you are running it on the trailer with pressurized water the impeller does not need to pull the water to keep it cool.

175 is high for an Excalibur anyway. You should see 161 or so at all times.

Thermostat stuck shut? I am pretty sure water will still flow through exhaust and such, you will see the water through RW strainer, but if thermostat is stuck shut, no water to engine...therefore limp mode. I would check thermostat first.

You could also check the inlet valve next to the raw water intake, if it is not completely open it could reduce the water flow at high rpm (above idle). Another thing that could happen, though not likely, is the thermostat could be installed backwards...difficult to do, but I have seen it.

Does it have fresh water cooling? There are two water pumps - maybe the engine pump failed.

Make sure it is pulling a good draft from the lake. Check to make sure all your hose fittings are snug, no holes in the hoses, and that your strainer has the gasket in place and not loose.

Guage was showing hot, engine not. Ended up taking it to the dealer and they diagnosed bad guage. Replaced under warrenty.

You know what is a great, (and realatively cheap) tool for diagnosing this stuff....

One of those thermometers from Raytek, or Snap-On or Hawkeye.

The ones that you just point at something and there is a laser on it and
the gun just reads the temp.

Handy, you wont burn your hands, and it works great on Brakes too.
