I'm having problems with my engine. I don't think its cycling the lake water threw it like its suppose to. I took the water pump off and replaced the empeller which was shot, poot it all back together and its still not working right. The engine seems to be running fine, but as soon as I poot it in gear and go to take off it starts to overheat and the motor begins to smoke. I don't know what else the problem could be, I've checked the hoses and the vent on the bottom of the boat to make sure they weren't clogged. Any body have any ideas on what the problem might be. Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks.

RE: water pump problems
You more than likely put the pump on backwards. Best thing to do is take the pump back off (remember how you had it on before and the rotation of the engine), put it in a bucket of water and turn the pulley. You'll see quickly which is the right direction to mount it. Sounds like you'll need to install a fresh impellar as well. Also check the engine for impellar pieces if any were broken off.2001 Air Nautique

RE: water pump problems
Here is a thread with the recent debug of my water pump problem.

There is a great link in that thread to the Sherwood page with a breakout diagram for the pump. I also had a post with a step by step list of items to would check. There is an explanation on how the pump works so you know whether you have it on backwards.
Good luck,

RE: water pump problems
I just replaced the impeller in my boat and when I test started the boat hooked to a water line I noticed that the water was not coming out of my exhaust and the manifolds started to get hot real fast? I removed the cover from the Impeller, Removed the dead man switch from the boat and turned the engine over and noticed the Impeller was not turning. I found out that when I put the impeller in the keyway fell out , Maybe the same thing happened to you?
