Alternator to starter?

I'm just curious if anyone can tell me why the alternator is connected to the starter? I'm upgrading my alternator and need to know if it is absolutely necessary to connect the alternator up to the starter? Or can I just install the alternator and connect the power wire directly into the positive post on the battery?

I'm running a two battery setup, so the starter will still be connected to a battery, but the alternator will connect up to the AUX battery (so the setup would be: Alternator-breaker -AUX battery-hellroaring isolator/combiner-Breaker-Starting battery-starter).

Any help would be great PLEASE!!

The alternator is probably just connected to the same pole on your starter solenoid as your pos battery wire. I'd recommend using the directions that come with the new alternator.

That doesnt sound right. The alternator should be on the protected side of the engine breaker. Only the battery and starter should be on the unprotected side.

The wire that came with my kit comes with a 100amp fused cable. Click on the cable picture in that thread and you can see where the fuse is.

I bought the same kit as wake_fun from Skidim. Kit was easy to install. It bypasses the stock 60 amp breaker on the engine.
