My Nautique w/ GT40 starts very quickly and strong. However, the engine dies within seconds of starting. Tried giving it more throttle, the engine revs up but quickly dies again. I have the electric push button start and when I keep pressure on the start button the engine runs, but when I release the button the engine stops quickly. I'm thinking this is probably a fuel delivery or electrical issue. Has anyone ran into something similar with fuel injection? Any feedback will be appreciated, my mechanic will not be able to look at it for another 2 weeks!

RE: 2000 Nautique GT40 Running Problem
sounds kind of like the kill switch or lanyard to me. I had a similar problem with mine. Try taking the lanyard on and off a couple of times. If that is the problem just tie the wires together to bypass it since my guess is you don't wear it anyway.
Otherwise I think there is a relay that is related to the fuel system as well.

RE: 2000 Nautique GT40 Running Problem
Good guess on the lanyard but I am thinking that would keep it from starting all together.
I wonder if the push button start is not maintaining the "ON" position to the engine after start. Most systems have "Off", "ON", "START" where start is the momentary position that turns the starter but the "ON" position maintains the engine when running. I know there was another thread along these lines but for a keyed ignition. Not sure how it works with the keyless.___________________

RE: 2000 Nautique GT40 Running Problem
I had this same problem with a 2001 GT40. Apparently, the ignition circuit bypasses the kill switch in "start" and the engine will run as long as you hold the start button down. I checked the kill switch, after a call to West Coast CC, and the problem was solved.2010 SN 200 Team, Washington Promo Team

RE: 2000 Nautique GT40 Running Problem
Thanks for the reply, I have a strong suspicion that the problem is electrical rather than fuel related. So you're saying I should try to disengage the kill switch and the problem may be solved? I'll try it tonight and cross my fingers.

I have noticed that too - that the engine will run for a split second with the lanyard disconnected. Sounds like that is likely your cause.I own and operate Silver Cove Marine, which is an inboard boat restoration, service, and sales facility located in Mooresville, North Carolina. We specializes in Nautiques and Correct Crafts, and also provide general service for Nautiques fifteen years old and older.

RE: 2000 Nautique GT40 Running Problem
I ran into the same thing last weekend and after tracing the wires with a ohmmeter it turned out to be the "Kill Switch".
I unpluged the lanyard and reengaged it and presto, the engine runs......

Glad you got it fixed. That seems to be a very common problem on boats. I had to bypass my buddies on his 06 vlx this spring too.
They probably just put those in so the dealers can make some repair money since I don't think I have ever seen anyone actually use it.

I just checked my kill switch and it looks like the owner before be already tied the wires together. Mine ran great early today then died while running. I would try to start it and would run for a second then die. After a minute or two it would start. It ran great for about an hour straight, then it died again at about 30 MPH. turn the key and it started right back up? I got nervous and took it in. On a previous post I mentioned my voltage was reading high. Today it stayed at 16 amps all day. Could this have anything to do with it or does it sound fuel related?
Thanks,1998 SKI NAUTIQUE - GT40
