    Starts and dies

I took my boat out today to test out some new props and the boat wouldn't run. It is a 94 Ski Nautique with the 351 Pro Boss. It has a carb and the ProTec Electronic Management System. The motor will start but die immediately. I believe it is an electrical problem because the initial burst when starting is proportionately strong compared the the throttle position. Also, when looking down in the carb there was fuel visible.

Reading through the manual it talks about the Interrupter that is where a distributor would normally be. My guess is the Crank Position Sensor inside the interrupter is not getting the signal to the EMS computer thingy. Is there a way to test this sensor? They way I understand this system is the inner two tabs do the intial firing and then the computer figures out the timing and uses the outer 8 tabs to keep it running. So my theory is this sensor is half bad but I just don't know how to tell.

I have checked and cleaned all the ground connections I can find. I verified the circuit breakers are both good. I thought maybe it was the ignition switch but even if you hold it in the crank position it will still start and then die while the starter keeps on spinning.

Does it sound like I am on the right track for solving this? Are there any other ideas of what might be causing this? I have seen the retrofit kit from Ski Dim but hate to spend the money if it is something simple.

If your boat has the "safety lanyard" connected to a cutoff switch by the driver, check that first. (the switch)

I just love the simple answers. The safety lanyard had crossed my mind but only enough to make sure it was hooked up properly. I pulled the switch out and and it tested bad. Then I put a jumper wire in its place and the boat started right up.
      Thanks for your help.
