    Run engine before oil change

I have 97 sport with the gt-40 that does not have a drain hose. I will be extracting the oil through the dipstick. I have not used the boat this year.

Any thoughts on running the engine before I change the oil. What would be the advantages of warming the oil vs. pulling it out while it is in the pan. I currently has synthetic oil in it.

By running the engine and warming up the oil, you will be reducing the viscosity thus allowing for easier extraction. We change our oil using the drain hose (not the dipstick) and warming it up definitely helps the oil to drain better, so I think it would hold true for your situation as well.

Do you think there would be any benifit to having all the oil in the pan while draining it? I agrea that if the oil is warm it should come out easier.

Run the engine, let it warm up until the temp gauge is moving up (it doesn't have to be all the way to full operating temperature). Then shut the engine off and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes to let the oil drain back into the oil pan. You'll be able to get most of the oil...if you don't warm the oil first you'll leave even more in the bottom of the oil pan, plus all of the sediment that has settled over the winter.

All good suggestions above, warm oil is much easier to drain/pump.

Maybe not the case but if your boat is just coming out of a winter lay-up and it has dirty oil that is not a real good situation, the oil should be changed at the end of the season as part of the winterizing.

Quinner I agree with the oil change before winterizing. My oil was good when I did winterize and I just did not have the time at the end of the season. Part of my problem was I needed a new pump to get the oil out of the dipstick. Next year I will changewhen i winterize it. I thought warming it up might be the best, I just wanted to make sure that there was no benifit from having all the oil in the pan.

            Thanks for the suggestions.
