    Slop in steering wheel

Sorry for all the posts lately. Just trying to make my tired '97 a new '04 ;-). I can grab my steering wheel and move it back and forth (in and out I guess) quite a bit. I am sure this is not normal. The piece behind the wheel that the wheel is screwed onto moves the same. I assume it is a problem inside near the tilt mechanism. Any ideas on how to take the slop out?

    Thanks.

Is the main nut for it tightened up? It is located behind the center pop out cap.

Is it slop while you are driving it or slop while you are putting your hands on the wheel and just moving it up and down?

Slop is noticeable when sitting in the driveway- not while driving. The top and bottom move back and forth.

The bushings could be worn out so there is some slop in there. All of that stuff is located in the helm. I would check with your dealer but more than likely, you would need to replace the helm.
