Boat died and wont start after it gets hot.

1991 Barefoot 454 w/ protec 330 hours. Had been cruising for 20-30 min. and the boat died like the ignition had been turned off. Would not restart. Getting fuel to the carb, pulled a plug and no fire. Pulled out the voltmeter and getting fire to the coil with the switch on and in start position. Engine seems to start after cooling. No kill switch, the grounds look good, replaced the crank position sensor but i doubt that is it, checked the fuel filter plugs and coil studs and all look good. Took the coils off the the ignition module and checked for continuity all look brand new. I am afraid the module is falty and i will be faced with the retrofit. Is there any way to test the module or anything else with the protec that i could have missed???????

I had to do the retro fit on my 91 sport also. $500 from skidim and hopefully your boat will be running like new again.

I just hate to scrap the protec with out knowing for sure that is it. I am going to try and run the boat and get it hot and see if i can get it to repeat the no start symptom and then take a wet cold rag and try and cool down the module. If this makes the boat fire i believe i will say goodbye to the protec unless anyone thinks there is hope through PCM. Anyone????? Seems everything i have read points to them hoarding the protec parts for the EFI engines.

Our 93' w/Pro Boss and carb had the exact symptoms + some sputtering/missing at higher RPM's, did the DIM retrofit and the problem was solved.

went out today and ran the boat, got it good and hot turned it off trying to get it to duplicate the problem and of course it starts every time. I am wondering if there is anyway it could have been fuel related. I know that it was getting fuel but this is the tank that has the STABIL in it and the tank that has been in there all winter. I made sure to fill it up to prevent condensation.

I started the boat 10-15 times with no problem at all. Any thoughts on the STABIL or anything else?

I really hope its not the protec because i dont want to lose my limp mode and knock sensor when switching to the retrofit electronic ignition.

          Help!!!!

Thought i would confirm what i had read. Contacted PCM about the ignition module. There stock is low and they will only sell to EFI engine owners due to the fact the EFI owners would have to convert to a carbureator and then electronic ignition vs just converting to electronic ignition. I still dont know if there is a way to convert and salvage limp mode and the knock sensor but i dont see it. According to PCM the retro conversion kit is cheaper than the computer anyway and then they mentioned the next time it failed there woudl definetly be no more modules and then i would be forced to convert anyway. I just wonder what the life is for these computers and how prone they are to failure?

Thought i would share the latest in this protec saga. The boat did its no start after getting good and hot this weekend. This led to a day of not turning it off. However i wrapped the ignition module with some reflective heat shield and never had a problem sunday.

It was like $30 for a 6"x24" piece from advanced auto. Used some spay adhesive to glue it to the module with the reflective side facing the mounting plate and the engine.

Does anyone know if this condition will worsen or if it just heat sensitive and not on a downward spiral?
