Strange Starting Issue

Hey everyone! I was out on the lake on Friday and things were going fine the engine fired, started great then after awhile I shut the engine down to let my kids play in the water. We sat for awhile and when we went to leave I turned over the engine only to hear it click and not start. It's a 1999 GT-40 5.8 L pro air. I looked it over and could not find anything. The battery is brand new this year (optima blue top). So I was thinking the selonoid or starter and then I considered the starter relay, but the strange thing is that the engine started all of a sudden when I turned the key rapidly back and forth. Then ran like a champ all day on Sat. Then I considered the ignition switch. Any Ideas?

Intermittent problems can be frustrating to say the least. If you hear the clicking from around the back of the engine area, I would think the ignition switch would be OK. I would suspect either the solenoid or the connections at the 10 way connector. If you are electrically capable, the wiring schematic can be found on pages 283 and 284 of the GT40 Service Manual at:

Hope this helps but I guess you will find it difficult until it fails again.

Well, I replaced the starter relay today and that fixed the problem. Thanks for the posts.
