I'm looking at a possible purchase of a 96 Ski Nautique. Very good price. However there's this one catch. Seems the current owner has experienced this problem where the motor runs fine up to around 3200 rpm then dies. Don't know if it stumbles first since I haven't driven it yet. Owner claims tried separate fuel tank, replaced carburetor, ignition system, and everything inbetween to no avail. Not having a clue to the proclivity of Nautiques to electrical problems. Perhaps you can suggest if I should run away or buy it and hope I can fix the problem for under $3K?

RE: Newbie question
An entire engine should be under 3k, so I'm sure it can be fixed. Sounds like ignition to me - could be a cheap fix.

RE: Newbie question
Thanks M3Fan. That's what I'm hoping. Won't be able to confirm the owners statements until next weekend. I know the head marina mechanic and he'll give me the straight scoop. My ignorant guess is leaning toward the "engine electronics loosing rpm sensing and shuts down" problem I've seen on the net. Most of the marina mechanics are part changers and don't have the time to diagnois an obscure electrical problem. Another problem for the owner is that he hasn't a trailer to get the boat to an authorized repair center. I need a trailer, anybody what to recommend a Nautique friendly trailer brand?
