    Noise coming from GT-40

Last week the engine in my boat started to make a high pitched whining noise. Its not loud, but you can definately hear it. It makes the same sound as the fuel pump from early to mid 90's Chevy trucks. Could it be the fuel pump in the boat? It just started last weekend, and the boat ran fine. It only makes the noise when the engine is running. I checked it with the ignition on, but the engine shut down, and it didn't make a sound. Any advise? Do I need to worry about this?

    Thanks for the advise.

Could it be the impellor? Was it changed this season?

Was the boat in the water at the time? Or were you running it with a hose? In gear and in neutral did it make the noise? A little more info might be helpful - which engine?

if it is a squirrell-sounding noise (for lack of a better term) it could also be the trans fluid pump. Does it go away if you give it a tad more throttle?

          gotwake,
The boat was in the water at the time it made the noise, it did it in neutral and in gear. I had been at the lake all day, it just started doing it just before I left. I couldn't tell if it make the noise at higher speeds. Its the GT-40 engine. I replaced the impeller last month.

More than likely it is one of your fuel pumps. Have you been running gas with alcohol?

I would also suspect it was one of the fuel pumps or a restriction in the fuel system. But check what type of gasoline you are running to make shure it is not alcohol blended, it should be marked on the gas pump

Thanks for the help, I took the boat out last night and it didn't make the noise. Hopefully it won't come back. As far as I know there isn't any alcohol in the gas, but I'll check next time I fill up.

you might take a look at your belts. any mis-alignment or water on the belt might cause a squeal under load.

belt squeal would be more apt to happen when you first start the boat with the thermostat closed and the alt. kicking in to overcove the start cycle discharge.
