Need to replace the rear bilge pump on the a 2000 Air N. Direct Drive that has stock ballast tanks. How do you get to the pump, do I have to down through the rear locker ? Ouch. If that is the access any advise on getting to the pump is appreciated. Thanks

RE: Rear Ballast Pump - Direct Drive
Both of the pumps are located in the engine compartment (I'm assuming that this hasn't changed between the 2000 and 2001 Air). If you are looking towards the rear of the boat, they should be tucked down on the right hand side in the engine compartment. Based on where our's are, it shouldn't be difficult to remove them.2001 Air Nautique

If it's the rear ballast pump, it's under the removable floor behind the dog house. If it's the rear bilge pump, then you will have to go through the ballast tanks. There is an access hole to do this, but getting the hose off the pump is gonna be a b*&^%$. You might be able to reach from under the fuel tank, but I don't think so. The pump has a waterproof plug, so that won't be hard to deal with, I just cut mine, and then spliced to the new pump.
This was one of the reasons I decide to pull my hard tanks from the trunk...
Let me know if you have other questions.

mcbridek,
I have a 2001 AN. My ballast fill pump is located in the engine compartment under the FCC. My ballast drain pump is just aft of the engine compartment on the port side. You can reach in from the engine compartment to get to it, you can reach in from the round access panel in the floor for the shaft/packing gland, OR if you plan to replace it and have to deal with pulling the hoses off, you can remove the engine cowl then slide the center floor section out from under the fuel tank/rear seat. I had to replace mine this winter, $54 from white lake.
Cheers,

There is a problem with the question here. The title of the thread says BALLAST PUMP, but the body of the post says BILGE PUMP. If your talking ballast pumps, then the previous posters are correct, the best way to get to the rear is to remove the back floor panel.
Be sure to check out the pump model before buying a new one. I have a '99 Air and when I looked to replace my pump, I found the exact same model at wal-mart for about $27. Attwood 750gph I believe.

I'm sorry for the confusion, it is the rear bilge (not ballast) pump that I need to replace.06 Ski Nautique 196 SE (2010)

Easiest way to access it...remove the brackets that hold your gas tank in place...move your gas tank towards the front of the boat. Bilge pump will be directly below it, I highly suggest not trying to work around it....the more access you have, the easier the job will be.
The red arrow points to where the bilge pump is

99 sport is probably correct, however you will need to remove the fuel filler hose (on my boat this wasn't that easy, not impossible) and the vent hose, on my boat I had to cut a bunch of ty wraps for the bilge empty hoses, and be careful with stock bilge hose, it is very thin, and will tear very easily!
His red arrow is pointed to the tblock for the fill/empty hoses for the stock ballast, the rear bilge pump is back near the rudder, as a matter of fact on my boat the stock wire run is ty wrapped to the rudder assembly.
If you pull the fuel tank forward, you can MAYBE manuever the hard tanks enough to get a good shot at the bilge pump, I would recommend a heat gun to get the original empy hose loose...
good luck,

Thje heat gun is a good idea. It wil soften the hoses and make them easier to remove. I have worked on a boat that had both wires that power and ground under a metal washer, and that caused a short circuit, and tripped the bilge breaker until I fixed that. check the wires to your bilge pump. You might only have to fix some wires, and not disassemble the whole back half of the boat. On my boat (1851 hours) I had to remove the bilge pump and clean all the built up grime out of the inside of it, so it would not run constantly. both of these ideas could be totally unrelated to your boat, but they might apply in your case.

Well the red arrow was supposed to point to the spot where the zip ties screw in to the bracket that actually holds the bilge pump...but it's a little hard to tell unless the picture is blown up all the way (seemed to work yesterday, but not as much luck today). As for the hose removal...mine slid off pretty easy, looked to be some grease that was in their and it came right off

I have removed my balast tanks on my Air. To get to the Rear bilge pump you have a big job cut out for ya if you need to remove the balast tanks.
1. take out the floor in the trunk
2. Remove the rear seat. The base and the back
3. your gonna have to take the supports that hold the gas tank out
4. remove the fill lines attached to the fuel tank
5. scoot the gas tank forward
6. detach all the lines to the balast tanks
7. remove the balast tank
