    Fuel pump issue

My engine has started "whining", sounds like the noisy fuel pumps on Chevy trucks. It has done it occasionally over the past couple years, but only a couple times a year. Now it has been constant for the past couple weeks. Then yesterday every time I started the boat, it had to turn over for several seconds before starting, something totally new. Anyone had this issue, or know what could be causing this? I'm guessing its one of the fuel pumps, just from the noise. I have a '95 GT-40, w/o the FCC

    RE: Fuel pump issue

I would check the low pressure pump first. it should be in the bilge between the tank and the FCC. If your lucky you can just follow the winning sound..Have you run the engine with the cover open. If its the High presssure pump the winning will come from the FCC. The high pressure pump is inside.

Just unplug the LP pump and see if it goes away, if not replug it in and unplug the hp pump, and see if it goes away, if it doesn't it isn't either fuel pump. That is if you have electric fuel pumps.

Checked it last night, its definately the LP pump. My question is, should I replace it now, or wait until it fails? I really don't want to spend the money ($350) if I don't need to, but also don't want to get stranded. Any idea as to how long these pumps will last once they start making this noise, or does it just go out?

I don't know how long they will last, but mine went out over the winter, and the motor wouldn't start at all. Would crank, and sputter a bit, but no sustained running. Had to replace, motor runs great again, so it may not be worth it if you get stranded because of a failed fuel pump.

It depends how far from shore you might be, or how many good friends are in the boat and have to swim home...
