I'm currently looking into an '83 2001 with 900 hrs on the motor, and I figured I should rebuild the motor now so I won't be stuck with a dead motor in the middle of the summer. I have never fooled with a boat engine before, but have helped rebuild a Ford Explorer V6 and a few Suzuki Samauri 4 cyl. What can I expect to find when starting my rebuild, and where is the best place to purchase a rebuild kit for the 351?

Tom why do you want to rebuild the engine? Is it not running properly? The first thing you need to do is evaluate the engine to see what is wrong with it before you rebuild it, then you can go from there. Also the ford 351W should run for 1000's of hours with out major problems. But if you are dead set about rebuilding the engine check out putting GT-40 style heads on it and upping the horsepower abit. Also check your trans out while you have the motor out.

nms1991, Thanks for the help. Basically as I said before, preventive maintenance. I will most likely be putting around 200 hrs on it this summer, and would hate to have it broken down in the middle of the summer. Also I'm buying from a dealer, so who knows the last time it has been run or its maintenance history. I'm looking into the GT 40 heads today. Thanks again.
