    RE: Rudder Lube

Darrel, is that a picture of your 93 or 95? I have a 1996 SNOB and for the first time since I've owned it, the rudder seems really tight. There is aslight amount of play at the steering column, but I've tightened everything under the dash and checked all the connections without replacing the cable thus far. Any thoughts? Was it difficult to install the Zerk fitting, etc.?

Like I mentioned before, disconnect the cable from the rudder end and see if the wheel is still hard to turn. If it is, you probably need a new cable.

Chances are its the cable. The only way to know for sure is to do as TRBenj suggests. If you've already performed this task and the rudder is tight, I suggest you remove the rudder shaft and clean it up. While the shaft is out, you can drill and tap a zerk fitting if you like.

The little bit of play you're feeling in the wheel is notoriously common. The cause, generally, is using the wheel as leverage to get out of the drivers seat. The cure--according to CC--replace the helm unit.

Pic is from the 95 and I grease from outside the boat. 93 had a fitting on the rudder port but had to remove the floor and squeeze under the fuel cell to get to it. I think TRBenj and SGY are leading you in the right direction with the cable and a cleaning of the rudder port.

Does anyone know where I can find a picture of a rudder disassembled? I need to remove it, but did not want to wing it
