where to get a Fuel pump

My boat is going into "limp mode", dropping back to idle once hitting 2450rpm, & my auto mechanic believes it's the hi pressure fuel pump. He has been on the phone with Midwest CC and a few other marine mechanics to determine this. I tried to order the fuel pump that is inside the fuel control cell. Unfortunately the local CC dealer said that you can only buy the entire Fuel control cell. The pump is only $150 but the whole cell is $525. Midwest is trying to order just the pump, any other ideas on how to get just the pump?

RE: where to get a Fuel pump

Do a fuel pressure check before you start replacing parts on a guess. A marine fuel injection engine does not have any air-fuel ratio feedback to the computer, and the computer just assumes that the fuel is correct. The first step in diagnosing any drive ability issues is to check fuel pressure.

We did check the fuel pressure and that is why we think it is the pump. It was pumping at 52psi and spec says it should be 57-62psi minimum.

www.skidim.com is a good source for parts. Please make sure you checked the fuel pressure under exactly the same conditions that a service manual for your exact engine calls for. Example: is the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator to be disconnected? Many of the service manuals are on line on this site. It is normal for the fuel pressure to be below spec on some engines at an idle, other engines it is not. Many engine systems are different on a marine engine than they are on an auto engine. Even auto mechanics now have to have access to up date information to be able to service auto engines in a shop.
I have had to deal with a mis wired "not a starter relay" on a GT-40 engine that somebody had his "expert" auto mechanic replace. If I did not have another boat with a GT-40 engine nearby, it would have been really difficult, and would have to make an extra trip to the shop to get the correct wiring information on how to wire the relay correctly.

Thanks for the feedback. I just got off the phone with Whitelake Marine and they think it is the oil pressure switch. He told me to disconnect it and see if that fixes the problem. I guess the low fuel pressure would not cause the check engine light to come on or the "limp mode" at 2450rpm. He said the oil pressure switch is located on the port side behind the pulleys. Anyone have a picture of it? Thanks for all your help. A broken boat is very frustrating.
