GT40 Starts then dies

Hey Guys,

This only happens after we have been riding for a bit, so the motor was run harder than just driving. I go to start it, it fires, tach revs up like it does when it first starts, then on its way back down, it just dies. Then finally when it starts, it does the same thing, tach revs up, as it comes back down, it catches it just before the dying point and runs fine. When it does happen it takes a bunch of times to get it to finally stay running.

Any ideas? I know it is hot in the motor box, does that effect anything?

What year is the GT-40? Vapor lock?

It is out of a 2001 Super Air. It cranks, fires does the intital rev up then when coming back down off that rev up just dies.

Perhaps a lose wire from the safety switch?

Only happens after it has been run hard. ie it is really warm in the motor box.

i thought the FCC is supposed to eliminate vapor lock, period.

My 98 GT40, kind of had the same thing one day. Ran fine, then would start and die. One time it died while I was cruising accross the lake, stopped and it restarted???

I replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pump relay and it has never done it again. Not sure which one fixed it, but after reading these forums, I suspected the relay.

I bought a spare and keep it on the boat just in case..

gt40 has a idle air bypass valve that the computer uses to adjust the idle. should have that checked. usually will not idle cold, idles better hot. also the throttle plate housing gums up around the plate and can cause a no idle.

Alright, going out again this morning. I will see if it happens again.

Did you replace the fuel filter inside the FCC or is there another filter that you changed? Any suggestions as to which relay is the best for replacement as well? Thanks in advance.

GT 40 Dies

I have a 98' Ski w/ the GT-40. It did the exact same thing to me last summer. Replaced safety switch and never again had a problem.

Mine was doing the same thing 8 months or so ago. But it was very sporatic. Would run fine one day and would start and die the next. I called Vince at Skidim, he recommended to first try a fuel pump relay, Problem solved. I hope yours is that simple.

I have the same problem in my 97 SSN. Is the safety switch and the relay the same thing? I was planning on replacing the fuel filter as it hasn't been replaced in several hundred hours. Where can I get the best price on these parts?

No they are 2 different things. you can check your saftey switch next to the throttle by disconnecting it from the swith and connecting the 2 wires together. If I remember correctyl they are purple??? The relay(s) are mounted to the engine next to the computer right behind the seat back. Pull your back seat and you will see them. They are to the right. I was told when you replace one, do both. They arent that expensive. I got mine from Vince at Discount Inboard marine (Skidim.com)

Relays were my problem
