    Bad Alternator?

Ok, not a motorhead, but very mechanical, so...... Boat would not start last night, battery too dead. A friend was sitting at the tavern by the boat landing, quick call, he has a 1994 SNCB with dual batteries, nice guy, pulle one out , make the switch, starts right up. Everything is AOK right? This was at 7PM, we ski for an hour and a half on glass calm water, great time, very sore today. Saw soem friends on their dock so we idle over and chat for 15 minutes, engine at idle, comparing the '91 with their '92. head back to the boat landing and the volt light comes on, look at the gauge, between 11-12. So this is a little concerning. Nothing else running but the engine and then the lights after the "talk". Does this sound like an alternator thing? BAd connection somewhere? I am going to replace that battery (car and truck cheapo that was in it) with a nice gel cell marine battery, but what else? I plan on taking the alternator out and get that checked, so I might as well replace the belts right away, just want some opinions. Am I looking at the right things first?
    Thanks All!!

    RE: Bad Alternator?

Sounds like it to me. A quick check is to put a fully charged battery in it and watch the ammeter while runninng it for 1/2 hour. If it doesnt get over 12 V its probably the alternator. Make sure you rebuild that one or get a Marine unit. The difference is a screen that keeps sparks out of the bilge. A good thing.

That should be the one. However, if you want to put a whopping stereo in there, you'll probably want more than 51amps.

Sounds like an alternator. If your going to take it out and have it checked take it to a alternator shop. they will also probably be able to get you a higher output alternator. a 51 anmp alternator will get to max very quickly running an engine and a few accessories. I had a 55 amp in the SAN and my local alternator shop got me a 100 amp for $135. If you want the number for the let me know.

Ok, took the alternator out, I checked first to see if the belt was loose, that was ok. I took it everywhere in town, and finally had a guy give me the heads up. His comment "You've got troubles, but not from the ALternator, it's fine. So I guess I am going to put that back on, put my new battery in, and check all the connections and wires to (hopefully) find a bad wire or loose connection. And then Monday I will put my new alternator on the shelf in the garage so i haev it when I need it.
Thanks Guys, I hope I find something wrong, but at least i will be on the water this weekend.
