WATER LEAK FROM PROP SHAFTS EXIT POINT TO WATER

    Hey everyone,

I'm pretty fresh when it comes to boat repairs but you gotta start and learn somewhere. I've got a 93 SN with a pretty steady leak of water coming through the packing of the prop shaft. It collects about 6 inches of water over night. Does anyone have a fix-it-yourself guide to replacing the packing or stoping the leak?

Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks all.

before u replace the packing, try tightening the packing nut. if ur not sure how, just do a quick search, its been a pretty popular topic lately

Search shaft packing there are several posts. There is also a good site at Boats.com for packing. I also agree with Andrew loosen the lock nut, tighten the nut 1/4 to 1/2 turn or until there is about 3 drops/min. good luck

The packing has probably lost all of the tallow, or fat in it, and it is no longer sealing or lubricating.

If it has, then you will need a packing hook, and about 2 ft of the shaft packing.

A packing hook looks like a corkscrew on a flexible handle.

Wrap the packing around the shaft, cut it with an overlapping angle, x 3 and RE RE the packing with new.

Then, when you put it in the water, check and tighten / loosen as necessary.
