What do you guys use for mildew buildup. I had to go out of town last minute and left the boat in the water, being in Orlando with the rain everyday i have several green spots showing up on my nice grey carpet. I have a 2005 SANTE and i dont want to ruin the carpet.

Power washer. Sounds scary, but it really works. It will blast away dirt and mildew. Plus, it will make the carpet fibers stand up again. Just don't hold the nozzle too close to the carpet. Start about 18" and work your way closer until you like the results.

I'm interested in trying this, but do you cover the seats and engine cover when pressure washing or take everything out? Don't you end up with a mess from the dirt/water coming off the carpet? What kind of soap, if any do you use? Thanks for suggestions, Chris

i power wash too and use simple green solution since it is biodegradable. I reserve this technique to a major cleaning but the simple green helps keep the bilge fresh too. No need to cover the vinyl, just don't blast away. The power washer is pretty easy to control. I did have the rear seat out actually the last time and that worked great.

I use a pressure washer, also. I have noticed when I go over the carpet the first time, nothing much comes out. After the carpet is wet, I start getting brown water coming off the carpet. I try to position the boat on a hill, so the water wants to run the back, with the back seat removed. I chase the brown water to the back, several times. I have used Simple Green, very diluted dish wash soap, (Dawn) Rug Doctor cleaning solution, and one time when the boat had a bad smell, a weak solution of bleach.
I have also used a Rug Doctor cleaning machine, but it is hard to move it around in the boat, get into the corners, or under the bow. If you rent a Rug Doctor to do your home carpets, it is worth hitting the boat, also, but not really worth a trip and rental just to do the boat.
A stiff nylon bristle brush also helps clean the carpet, but it is hard work, on hands and knees.
To dry the carpet, put the boat on a hill. and it will drain faster, and dry sooner. After the water has run off for a while, lay down towels on the floor, they will soak up a lot of water. Do not use fabric softener on your boat towels, it makes them soak up less water.
I also sometimes put the cover on half way, and put a fan blowing air around the motor box to finish drying the boat.

If you have some small spots, or even largish patches, of mold or mildew anywhere in your boat, a 50/50 solution of regular old over the counter peroxide from the grocery store and water will kill mold and mildew and is MUCH MUCH MUCH safer than bleach. Peroxide will also safely bleach out coke, coffee and blood stains....although you have to use the peroxide full strength.


OR

Go to your local janitorial supply house and get some good peroxide based tile or carpet cleaner...sometimes it will be called tile cleaner...but you must get the stuff that has peroxide, not any acids.!!

This product will get rid of any mold and mildew with out the hazards of Bleach. If you clean your carpets with alot of alkaline chemicals or over the counter cleaners, your going to have a buildup of alkalinity or chemical residue. This will cause you carpets to resoil faster.

Best bet is to rent or buy a little carpet spotter to rinse out and extract anything that you are putting onto your carpets to clean them with.
The peroxide cleaner in the solution tank of the spotter works GREAT as a rinse agent to help neutralize the alkalenity and rinse out chemical residue.
