    drivetrain question

just curious, how hard should it be to turn my prop by hand with the trans in neutral? th reason i ask is lately i noticed when i click my boat in gear my rpm's drop significantly more than normal and it feels like the engine is struggling. i tried turning the prop by hand out of the water and i have to use two hands and it is pretty tough to turn...no vibration concerns though.

There will be a little bit of resistance to it. How old is the boat? Also, for a quick check, double check your trans fluid. When you say the RPM drops more than usual, how much are we talking? (what to what)

It will be rather hard unless the bearing (or is it called a bushing, whatever the name it is the rubber surrounding the shaft) in the strut is well lubricated with water.

Once it does start spinning, it should be easier to turn. The initial friction is high, but tapers off once it starts to move.

trans fluid is good...its a 1990 sport. when i say the rpms drop, my base idle in neutral is about 800 and when i put it in gear it drops to about 4-500 and feels like it almost wants to stall initially then it feels almost like its running rough until i give it some more gas, then it seems fine. i dont think its engine related though. oh yeah and my prop doesnt seem to taper off when i spin it...it just feels real hard to turn.

It almost sounds like the carb needs to be adjusted. The idle rpm should be around 650-700 rpm. Adjust it and see how it does. I am almost positive that will take care of your problem.

Yeah, if you pull your boat out of the water and then try spinning the prop, it should spin easily- pretty much should be able to turn it with one finger. If the bushing is dry it will be considerably more difficult.
