Ignition trouble please help -- I am desesperate

    Dear all

I have recently provide a new coil with integrated ballast resistor from Pertronix

STEP 1 : First off all, installing Pertornix coil :

AS this coil as an integrated ballast resistor, and according to instruction I have shortcut my original ballast resistor according to attached picture.
Ignition key side of the resistor connected to the + side of the coil.

I have done this yesterday ( due to bad wether) . I has work ok for a while and when motor gets a bit hot in temperature, then problem was starting (motor was caughing a lot until stopping) and I immediately stop my engine and verify the coil. The coil was extremely hot. Since that time I am not anymore able to run my engine. Engine start but motor coughing a lot until it stop with white smoke escape from the carburator filter.
Even if I let the coil cool down and try again the same day. Motor stil caughthing a lt with white smoke and then stop. This without engage.

I have totally disconnected wire from the coil and verify that it is still
    1.5 Ohm. it is.

I am afraid that inside ballast resistor as blown !!! Could it be possible ?
    What do you think ?
Did I make a mistake on connecting cable on picture above ?

STEP 2 : Replace to my original coil :

I have then replace back to my original coil with original ballast resistor connection, my motor do not start at all..
Seems not enough voltage at the coil. I still have the 12V at the ballast ignition key side.
But when cranking the engine I have 0 V at the + side of the coil. Does it means that ballast resistor is dead ?

    Thanks for help

In the picture, you have a ballast resistor, and the coil. But you said the coil has an internal resistor. And you bypassed (shorted around) the ballast resistor, according to the picture. But your drawing does not bypass the resistor, it added the one internal to the coil in parallel with the external ballast resistor. This would give you a lower total resistance, and therefore more current flowing through the coil, therefore REALLY HOT!!! Let me know if i have read your statement correctly, because as you have it drawn, your didn't bypass the ballast resistor.

Thats not correct. He does have the resistor bypassed, as the + side of the coil should be getting a full 12V from the ignition switch.

However, the - side of the coil should not be connected to the other side of the resistor. That wire should only be run to the distributor. Grounding the - side fires the coil through the distributor, so its no surprise that holding it at ~10V is keeping your motor from running.

Use this diagram as a guide (ignore the kill switch).

        thnaks for your drawing,
that was what I was looking for as in my boat manual it is really poor...
By the way with the way I have connected (- coil connected to ballast) did I destroy something ?

Becasue with such cabling the motor start caughing a lot and then stop with a white smoke coming out from the carburator filter...

With my cabling if its true that the ballast is in paparelle to the internal coil rsistance, it is also true that my coil was really hot after a while

        thanks for your help

Its possible that either the coil or ignition module/points were damaged due to the wiring error. Im not surprised that it ran rough or that the coil got hot. If nothing looks visibly damaged, correct the wiring and give it a try.

ONe think still based on this drawing ...
I think on my boat the tack signal wire ( white cream color) is at the + side of the coil and the - side of the ballast resistor goes to - side of the coil...

How to figure out from my coil which side is + and which one is - if there is no mark on it due to old one ?

            regards

              Dear all,

I finnally manage to get my boat up and running from its original state.
Problem was coming from the ballast resistor which is defect and also the ignition condensator which was not woking properly.
Now even with my original coil, I have been advise from a boat electrician here to remove the ballast whatever the coil I am using as soon as the coil is working under full 12v. By experience they get too man trouble with those ballast in many situation
I have to say that my boat start faster without this ballast and more regular…

              regards
