    Timing a 1993 Sport Nautique w/ PCM 351-W Protec e-ignition

    To any PCM engine expert,
Had to take the top end down to replace head gaskets. Reassembled distributor with rough alignment based on exterior marks we made during disassembly.

Engine is running with slight shutter at low speed/idle, but is backfiring through carb when at or above 4k RPM’s. Can't seem to find specifics on timing the engine with the Protec ignition system. I understand with conventional distributor, # 1 cyl. at TDC with rotor to rear when distributor is fully seated is where you start to time it.

Can someone confirm this is the same for Protec ignition? Or provide timing details for Protec setups?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Staic timing is 10 dgrees btc, 18 degree's at 700 rpm. You have to disconnect the knock sensor to time as the computer changes the timing if the throttle isn't moved in a set amount of time.

Knock sensor on Ford 351-W and timing Pro Tec ignition?

      Thanks for the response!

I was able to get it timed today. Unfortunately found that plug wires 3 and 4 were crossed probably causing the backfiring. Thanks to whoever posted the wiring diagram in another link!

No service manual available. Don't know how to disconnect the knock sensor or where it is. Was finding that during timing at 700 RPM, I could not get it down to 18 degrees. I would guess because knock sensor is still connected...?

Is running like a champ, but would like to know about knock sensor and if I could improve performance with correct timing without knock sensor.

Heard that knock sensor is only on Chevy engines... True? This is Ford 351-W.

      Timing details for others:

Static (engine off): 10 deg BTC with Pro Tec rotor marking FE-1 (or similar) needs to be in sensor at #1 cyl. at TDC
at 700 RPM: 18 deg BTC
at 3600 RPM: 30 deg BTC

      Thanks!

At the rear of your l/h bank there should be a sensor screwed into the head, just pull the plug off the end of that.

Knock sensor on Ford 351-W and timing Pro Tec ignition?

          Hey Rob,

Checked each end of each head and there is no sensor or wiring...

Wish I had a service manual for this B-yatch.

          Thanks for the help!
