shredded impeller..and still surging?

well i was back out on the lake yesterday,and after only 5 minutes she started to surge again,just a few times but still very frusrtrating.espicially considering it hasn't done it now for weeks.anyways opened her up for about 15 minutes,ran flawless.then slowed down,check eng.light came on and started to surge again.i noticed that the temp broke 200 so i limped back to the ramp got it on the trailer by hand so it wouldn't have to crank her up and let it idle. once situated,i went to crank her up to pull up the last few feet, and nothing would come on,its as if the boat was in gear or batt was dead.so i went to the dealed picked up a new impeller (the old one was toast),and while there the service guys were telling me that once the check eng.light comes on the boat goes into "safe mode" and will not let the motor climb in speed and rpms.normally i don't make it a habit of believing everthing a dealer tells me,but it sure would make it alot easier this time around.i thought the surging could still be not related and due to excessive heat(its 100 degrees at my lake) and full tank of gas,possibly vapor lock.any other ideas?thanks-cody

okay i called the local dealer today and he didn't know if a 98 with the gt-40 would have the "limp mode".anyone here know?

Cody- Your GT-40 should have limp mode. My '99 w/GT has it, I would only assume yours would too.

did you clear all the impeller chunks out of the manifolds and most importantly, the t sta hosuing?

when my impeller grenaded, many chunks ended up in the t stat housing. that could cause an overheat issue

i did clean out everything,t-stat hsg,all the hoses,strnr,etc. would the limp mode cause it to surge?only reason i ask is because it surged once about 3 wks when out.now that could have been when the impeller started going and i didn't even notice it was running hot,but i seriously doubt it.

My 1997 went into limp mode once, raw water pump bearings failed. Disconnecting one battery cable should clear out any trouble codes, as well as your preset radio settings.
