Take That Nasty Scratch Out !

So i was following some of the other threads regarding the removal of scratches and i had few from a friend driving my boat and decided to take the polisher to the beautiful gel coat ! I obtained excellent results ! The boat is once again Showroom ! Don't fret it is a piece of cake ! The goods you will need are:

All 3M part numbers (I Chose 3M because they are the BEST !)

    Rubbing Compound 5954
Finishing Compound Finesse It II 5928
    Imperial Hand Glaze 5990
    Hookit Polishing Pad 5713
    Perfect It Foam Pads 5723
    Perfect It Backup Pad 5717

Here is some of the 3M part numbers that i used:

    1. Start with 1000grit moving up to 2000grit WET sand paper. (I did not use the sand paper but i see some have)

    2. Use a polisher (not a grinder), it shoould spin at 3000rpm MAX. The one iused was a no name brand Princess Auto (Canada) which spun at 1000RPM to 3000RPM. I used the 3M 5717 Perfect It Backup Pad on the polisher

    3. Started with the 3M 5954 Rubbing Compound on the 5713 pad. Don't let it get to dry and buff back and forth until scratch has dispappeared (if really deep try the wet sandpaper). Nice and even over a nice area.

    4. Then use the Finesse It 2 5928 on the 5723 pad, once again buffing as you did with the Rubbing Compund until you see a perfect finish. Keep the Finees It fairly wet as well. I found the more compund i left on the pas the better the finish.

    5. Wipe off excess splatter and clean boat.

    6. Use a dry rag and apply the Imperial hand glaze 5990 in a polishing fasion. Then remove with a dry clean rag.

    7. Add a nice coat of Meguiars Flagship wax and Voila, perfection !

I know some were asking for 3M part numbers, so there you go ! I took out all my scratches and some rub marks from the cover from the previous owner. That Gel Coat is good stuff !

    Love the Nautique !

If you read the back of the bottle of the Super Duty compound , you'd know that it removes scratches left by 1000 grit paper. No need to sand past that.

In my experience, the Finesse-It II finishing material (polish) is not aggressive enough to remove scratches left by the Super Duty. I used an Imperial Microfinishing compound in between the 2.

I didnt notice any improvement with the shine by using the Glaze. It was also very hard to work with (it dried very fast and was very difficult to remove). Admittedly, it was very hot and humid at the time (90ish), but I was in the shade. I think this step is worth skipping.

Each 3M bottle will also have the speed (RPM) recommendations for each product in case you forget. Make sure you follow them.
