    Breakerless ignition problem-resistor/coil?

Hey all, started having ignition problem under load (1500-2000 rpm) mis-firing. ('88 2001). Installed all new plugs, checked for broken/loose wires, etc... still same prob. Installed the skidim prestolite breakerless ignition last year and started having this problem this year. Seems to be getting worse. Original coil, and did not bypass the resistor. (That could be the first prob!) Figuring I had better get a new coil and bypass the resistor to hopefully cure this problem. Wondering if I should order that prestolite coil the instructions talk about or go with a new one from the autoparts store. Reading the other forums, looks like I need the 1.5 ohm coil. Do I need a specific brand coil? Any ideas?

    RE: Breakerless ignition problem-resistor/coil?

well, I have been having ignition problems on my 78 martinique, which has the same motor as your 2001.

Is the coil getting very hot? if so, then you should put a resistor in.

With mine, a multitude of issues were occuring, but the main issue was my pertronix ignitor put in back in 2002 when i bought the boat, was failing. It woyuld cut out ignition and only being very lucky could I catch the motor from basically flooding itself with gas, and being able to limp home.

I switched to a new backup points system for the rest of the year, and that has solved most of my issues. but none of my issues are ignition, nor gas related now.

I think I have a failing/ leaking intake manifold gasket, which is possible ina boat near 30 years old.

your manifold gaskets could be failing as well. on mine it sounds like a vacuum issue, which could be the intake gaskets leaking in air.....

contrary to what many here will say, an Automotive coil will work just fine, even laid flat if its an oil filled coil. My issues still happened after putting the stock PCM coil on, as well as with the 3 other coils of various brands.

there could be several issues, but first check how hot the coil is getting. FWIW, there was no change in my running issue either with the resistor inline, onr bypassed, in either the ignitor, or the points ignition.

BTW, a new cap and rotor was not the fix for mine.
