    V DRIVE OIL

I have a 99 Super AIR. I belive it has the walters V drive in it but not sure. My question is when you check the V drive oil level, should you check it cold or hot and should you be able to see oil on the stick. Lastly how much oil does it hold, because if a little low dont want to over fill. Light still goes off at about 800 rpm but want to make sure its full. I have felt around it and dont feel any leaks but saw a little oil in the back of my drain plug. Not sure what it was from but fat sak poped in ski locker and put water in the bottom of boat so no telling what it cleaned off and bought to the back. Sorry for the long post its just scary seeing a little oil.

    RE: V DRIVE OIL

Check it hot, just after shut down as the lines and oil cooler will be primed. Or, you can check it while running in N, after you shift to F and R. Again, make sure it is warmed up.

sorry, not sure how much oil it holds.

        RE: V DRIVE OIL

I do not have a V-drive boat, but I have worked on them in the past. I believe it needs about a quart of oil, straight 30 weight engine oil. I believe it needs to be changes every 500 hours, or once a year. I think the service manual for them says that a light gear oil is also ok. Check your manual, the info should be in there.

A low oil pressure light on at 800 rpm is normal - it shouldn't be on above 1200 rpm.
Here it is from the owners manual:

          Checking and Adding V-Drive Oil
The oil level should be checked after the boat has been run and
allowed to sit for a minute. Remove the stern seat center cushion, the carpeted step and the access hatch. Pull out the oil level dipstick on the V-Drive. Proper oil level is between the “H” and “L” (HIGH / LOW). If the oil level is below the low mark,
unscrew the breather cap and add SAE #30 weight engine oil.
Screw the breather cap back on and replace the dipstick. The V-drive unit
holds approximately 2 pints of oil total.

          Low Oil Pressure Warning
There is a warning light on the dash pod on the ignition panel. This warning
light will stay on until the engine RPM increases to around 1200 RPM. This
RPM may vary as much as 400 RPM. Extended cruising at low RPM is not
harmful to the V-drive even though the light may stay on.
Loss of oil and / or insufficient oil level are the major causes of low oil
pressure. If the oil level in the V-Drive is too low, the oil level should
immediately be resorted. Run the boat after adding the appropriate amount of
oil and check the V-Drive for oil leaks.
If the oil level is normal and the light stays on, you should return the boat to
your Correct Craft dealer for service.

Try to reach all the bolts on the bottom of the V-drive, and see if they are tight. If you get all the water out of the bilge, you can put a dry paper towel under the v-drive and try to pinpoint the oil leaks, if there are any.

Check this previous topic out. If it's the gasket on the bottom of the vdrive it's not too difficult to fix.

Also, be careful not to fill it too much. I followed the owners manual procedure as stated above, and noticed a vibration at higher rpm's. I found the best way was to check it cold and fill until it reads between the high and low marks. No vibration. I actually drained a little while on the water and the vibration went away. Seemed as if when checking hot left too much in the upper end and it was too full.

We had a small oil leak in the hose on the V-drive on our new 226 may want to check that as well.
