Alignment of Water pump pulley

The belts on my GT40 have been leaving a lot of dust in the engine. Looks like they may be too loose. I also noticed that the water pump pulley is out of alignment with crank pulley.Any ideas on how to line it up?
Also the oil pressure gauge pegs out to 80 psi, even at idle, and never drops until I shut it off. I was suspecting a short on the wiring, not sure if the sending unit has ever been replaced.

I've noticed the same thing with my water pump, way out of allignment. My belts are 12 years old and have 400 hrs on them so it can't be that bad, but I'd think that it has to be harder on the bearings.

in most case,the curpit is the rusted pullys.for long term,change all the pullys with aluminum made.this will secure belts long life and no dust come out

The raw water pump does not an extreme amount of torque to turn it. If you really pry the pump hard away from the block when you are tightening the belt, it will pull the pulley out of alignment. You can also polish the grooves of the pulley with a wire brush and get some of the rust off the pulley. Opening your engine cover and letting the compartment dry out might help the pulleys not rust as much.

If you really pry the pump hard away from the block when you are tightening the belt, it will pull the pulley out of alignment.

I have to put a good amount of pressure on the pump to bring it into alignment, as well as get the proper belt tension. You can easily tighten up the pump when its not aligned- play around with it.

The raw water pump does not an extreme amount of torque to turn it.

It looks as though the RWP pulley is about one belt thickness aft the crank pulley on our '88. It's been like this all year, and possibly subsequent years without any problems. Next season when it goes back on I will try to get it properly aligned with a few washers.

rich nailed it. this is all you need to know right here. you will need to sand and paint your pulleys or go aluminum. the rust acts like sand paper and is sanding your belts down thats why you see black dust. it makes the belt drop down into the grove of the pulley wich makes it losen as well you can tighten it all you want but if you do not address the pulleys it will just sand them away until they break. its a very common problem.

ive used krylon and rustoleum both worked fine. just figure on doing it every 1 1/2 -2yrs depending on climate/conditions. if in salt dont waste your time just pony up for the alum. oh semigloss btw.

thats asking to be stranded!! you better have a spare your gona need it!!! $12.00 belt ruin your day .
