    GT-40 oil filter

Does anyone know the oil filters that can be used on a 1996 GT-40?

Another question, how many quarts of oil are required? Manual says 4 then add to replenish amount used by the oil filter.

    RE: GT-40 oil filter

I use the Motorcraft FL1A, and my engine holds about 4.5 quarts.

A lot of folks recommend that you fill the filter with fresh oil prior to installing. Probably a good habit to get in to.

Napa 1515 is a rebranded Wix 51515. Stick with those or a Motorcraft FL1A as previously mentioned- theyre all good filters. I always fill with 5 quarts.

Thanks for the help. I have filters cross referenced and now have several to choose from. The oil capacity question will be handled by installing 4 quarts to the crankcase and installing the filter with oil in it. That will put it well with in the distick limits. Adding later if needed.

Or you can start the engine with 4 quarts so that the filter will fill up and then add oil until it hits the full line. Five quarts takes it slightly above the line.

The reason for this is by putting oil directly into the filter oil will reach the block much faster upon start up after an oil change, hence minimizing the wear and prolonging engine life.

Yes, I fill the oil filter on all my vehicles when doing oil chacges. I was originally trying to find out if this engine takes an even 5 quarts or somewhere in between 4 and 5 quarts. After thinking about what the manual says, putting in 4 quarts and filling the oil filter 3/4 of the way full would be just the right amount. (3/4 full because the filter goes on at about a 45 degree angle and don't want to pour any back out when mounting)

Thanks again for all the input.

                    Two comments.

                    1. The big question is not how much it all holds....but how much drains out. The one year old 206 I just bought from a dealer came with a complimentery oil change and over a quart over full....good thing I checked it before I ran it. I suspect they did a cold oil change and didn't let it all drain out. I then drained it out cold (which took forever) and added back new oil a little at a time to get it a quart low...then warmed the engine on the water and topped it off. Next oil change will be HOT and into a clean tub so I can measure how much comes out. Note the PCM book says the engine pan holds only 4 quarts...probably due to the angle.

                    2. I also prime the oil filter. If you don't believe how beneficial this is, try changing the spin on fuel filter on a mercruiser 5.7 and not priming the filter with gasoline. It takes forever to fill and start.

On the engines with the remote oil filter, remember to allow for the two extra lines that need to fill also.
I second the Wix/Napa, they are the best filter out there.

once you change the fuel filter cycle key on 10secs off for 5 sec and repeat this 5 times it will fire right up.

This is the carbed merc with the electric GM fuel pump downstream of the filter and no low pressure pump before. I tried the trick with the key (you can hear the pump run) with no luck. Thought about jumping the pump to the battery but it was easier to just prime the filter. It might have been faster with a full tank of gas...there was only about 5 gallons in the 31 gallon tank.
