Has anyone broken an axle on a Ramlin trailer??

I think that I had a very LUCKY escape today. I was towing my boat to get fuel when my axle snapped just inside the leaf spring mount! I had just turned a corner and was slowly accelerating when I heard a pop, and I looked back to see smoke pouring from the trailer tire.

I'll post a pic later, but I got lucky and the flatbed driver was able to get the boat into the water so that I can get the trailer worked on. The axle is broken clean through, almost a perfect vertical shear. It appears to have snapped from where the leaf spring mount is welded to the axle.

Now I'll need to get this repaired, any ideas? Does Ramlin sell axle assemblies?

    thanks,
    Jack

Please post a pict. Age of the trailer? Did you have extra weight in the boat?

Glad to hear you escaped with minimal damage.

I had that happen on a Shor'land'r trailer towing my SeaDoo. I was going down the Fwy when someone waved at me. I stopped and saw the tire was at about a 45 degree angle from the rest of the trailer. Luckily my insurance covered it, in fact they totalted the trailer and just had me get a new one. Getting the broken trailer on the tow truck was a different story, it took us about a half hr or more just to get it loaded to be towed off.

          Ok,
here's an update on my broken axle story. I've got some pics attached, and if you want an update on how I got the trailer repaired, please PM me for details.

Oh yeah, no extra weight in the boat when the axle broke, as a matter of fact it was probably lighter than normal because I'm getting it ready for hibernation.

It appears to me, and someone else with quite a bit of engineering background, that the axle cracked after the plate (leaf spring mount) was welded to the axle.

As for being cast, it looks like it, maybe they started with a cast piece of 2" x 2" square material, and then bent the center part to clear the fins?

yeah, it looks to me like it could have been cooled too fast after the weld and became brittle then cracked....

I've had several Ramlin trailers and never a problem. I don't use my trailer but twice a year and tow only about 5 miles each way. Sits in my garage when not in use. I have heard about bent alxes. Have you talked to Dave at Ramlin? It looks like this is going be a painful fix. Wish you luck

I wonder the country of origin for that steel and mill work.
