Hey guys I just bought a 93 sport nautique 351 pcm and I was wondering where the impeller is located? I have a over heating issue and I wanted to check its condition.

RE: impeller location
Jeff, your impeller is going to be located inside of your water pump. You'll have to take the belt off and open the water pump. Given that it's a Ford, I'm sure it's probably located in the same place as ours, which when looking at the engine from the front, it will be the pully to your far left. On ours, it's three bolts to open up the water pump and then you'll see the impeller. If the impeller is chewed up and pieces are missing, then you'll probably want to check your themostat next, as one of the impeller pieces may have made it way up there. You'll want to check throughout the engine that you've found all of the impeller pieces.
Let us know what you find.2001 Air Nautique

RE: impeller location
MHayes is right, all the PCM 351w's have the same cooling system. The impeller is in the raw water pump (not to be confused with the circulation pump).1990 Ski Nautique

I located the impeller. It looked fine,(its a rubber wheel) I am going to test my t-stat next to see what temp range it is.

Hey guys I found out my t-stat was messed up. I want to order a new one can a 143 temp work in a pcm 351w or does it have to be the 160?

Run the 160. The engine needs to be at some reasonable temperature to keep the oil above 212 to boil the water out. Water is a product of combustion and accumulates in the block/pan. Plus head bolts and such are based on a certain amount of expansion due to heat expanding the heads and block. The engine is designed to run at 160 or hotter.

FYI, the 143 'stat in the 351w will allow the temp to remain around 160. The 160 'stat causes the boat to run closer to 180. Stick with the 143.1990 Ski Nautique

What exactly made you think that the 'stat was causing the problem? Its good to have the correct one in there, but its not one of the more common causes of overheating. If you still have a problem, be more specific in describing it and we can help diagnose. When does it overheat- idle or at speed?1990 Ski Nautique

Well It was overheating during warm-up on a hose, then it ran really warm when I took it for a drive, and after reading all of the past posts I looked at all my hose connections, imnpeller, then my t-stat. The t-stat was in rough shape, so I decided to put it in a pot of water and with a thermoter I checked it. atfer 200 degrees and no spring. I figured it was bad. Thanks for all the awesome feed back. I hope this fixed it. I am still waiting for the part, should be here tomorrow
