    temp gauge

the needle indicator for the temp gauge in my 92 ski, which normally runs at approx. 160, will jump (not a gradual rise) off the chart (hot),,, a slight tap to the gauge itself will cause the needle to return to the normal running temp... i'm guessing it's the gauge, as opposed to the sending unit,, any thoughts? i, and my bruised left index finger would appreciate any insight ... (no finger jokes, please)

    RE: temp gauge

Take the sender out and clean the threads. You could be loosing your ground. The sender is just an ohm meter and will max out when the sender goes bad or looses ground.

      RE: temp gauge

You can disconnect the wire at the temp sender, and then turn the key on, engine not running. Then, ground the wire to something on the engine you know is a good ground, and the temp gauger should go full range one way, and lifting the wire off the ground should send the temp gauge full range the other way.
Page 3E-24 of the GT-40 service manual, has specifications (Temperature resistance curve) for the temp sender of a GT-40 engine. Your engine may differ if it is not a GT-40.
You can down load the manual here:
