    Easy tune-up suggestions......????

I picked up a '92 BFN with a 454 last year and I was wondering what would be my best bet to pick up a little extra pep/power. It has about 675 hours on in and is in good running condition but when my buddies and I decided to see try and drag my friend up barefoot on the rope, it acted like I was trying to pull up a tree from the bottom of the lake.....granted we did have a few people in the boat and a sac but I would still like to think that I'd have enough power to pull up a barefoot in the case that I wanted to. I'm going to check and see what the pitch is on the prop this weekend (what is optimal pitch for out of the hole power?). Other ideas that I just assumed would be to adjust the carb. and maybe put new plugs and wires....??? I'm open to any other suggestions that may give me a extra power cause I'm about to sac out the boat for this season and I'm a little worried.

.....side note question- I know carb. engines are stubborn to start at the beginning of the day but is there an answer to getting an easier cold start?

    RE: Easy tune-up suggestions......????

I think you indeed need a tune-up. Our '88 Barefoot starts great when cold (even after a few months) or warm. And can handle ALOT of extra weight, boat weights only 2200lbs with 454 and 350hp... Do the math Yellow_Flash_Colorz: .

Check the 2 main things on a engine; Fuel and Spark.
Fuel; Good fuel lines (no leaks), good fuel pump, carburator clean-no leaks-good adjusted-choke(for cold start)-good secondary
Spark; Good battery, altenarator, ground and other wires. Distribtor(timing), coil, spark-plugs and wires.

Our 454 always ran good, but we also did alot of prevent tune-up. Like electronic ignition, new battery, new spark wires, new coil, carb rebuild. We have the boat for 7-8 years now and it never gave us any troubles.

      Holiday Inn Express answer here.

While a reprop can do wonders for most older boats, I agree with the above, there's no reason that relatively light boat with a 454 shouldn't be completely impressive out of the hole and all the way on up.

You dont have bad suggestions, but youre numbers are off. A '88 BFN weighs 2650 lbs (dry) with the 454 (which was only 330hp, by the way). By '92, the boat was up to 3100lbs with the big block. Add to the fact that its also a V-drive, Im not surprised to hear thats its a bit sluggish out of the hole, especially weighted down. I was never impressed with the holeshot of the direct drive BFN- its got a lot of hull to push out of the water. Im sure the DD is quicker than the Vee.
