I love the smell of teak oil in January

Well, new boat, new platform. So it was time to make it mine. I stripped to bare wood. Scrubbed, brightened, sanded up to 1,000 grit wet (why 1,000 grit? Because I was out of 2,000 grit). Switched over to xxxx steel wool. 3 coats of oil on the bottom. 5 on the top. Light steel wool rub between coats That should hold it until next year.

Let's see yours. C'mon G-Man, I'm looking in your direction.

Looks great. I'm running out of winter to get my projects done but my platform is one that's on my list too. Previous owner varnished it so I'm kinda dreading dealing with it but I know it needs to be done.

Save yourself some time and frustration with the varnish. Take it to a furniture shop have it dipped to remove the varnish, then cleand with TSP, let dry and oil it yourself

Which teak oil did you use? also use TSP?

1000 grit eh... i was worried about my 220 being too slick post oiling and getting wet.

I had an acquaintance "do me a favor" and varnished my platform with some heavy duty THICK deck sealer while I stored my boat at their house for a couple weeks. Not looking forward to stripping all that stuff off. Maybe I'll try the furniture shop route.

I used the Amazon blend because that's what is available to me locally. I'm told that plain old starbrite is the best. Just can't find it when I want it.

Despite the appearance, it is not slick and does not have a residue on it. Though I shine it up in January, I'll be standing on it putting my ski on through November. So I don't want residue on the ski. The real beauty of doing it this way that I've found is that next year, I'll just hit it with the steel wool, add one coat of teak oil, and it'll shine like new.

And h20skifreak, if anyone is the Harold Page of planetnautique, it's G-Man. Plus, those two sand up to 2,000 grit wet.

That stinks. Bet you remove it before you store next year. :o

Generally varnish in time will separate from teak. I'm sure someone has got it to last but I would never use anything other than teak oil on teak.

What's funny is that I noticed their platform was varnished years ago and thought what the heck would they do that? Little did I know I was next!!!

I'll look into the furniture shop as well. Thanks for the tip. It should be a crime to put that crap on teak. I personally love the look of freshly oiled teak and have never understood why people try to take the lazy man's approach to making it look nice.

That unfinished furniture place on Broadway in Tyler (Woodshed IIRC) might work with you on this. They were good to work with when we were doing a custom entertainment center and d their staining in house. I suspect they might be able to strip that platform for you.

Have you thought about adding a transom saver? My last one had it, and I think it really served its purpose. I had teak world make it. I think I will try to make my own for my current boat. BTW great looking work!

Yes, it's on my list. I had one on my last boat and liked it. How much did teakworld charge? Did the already have the pattern or did you have to make one for them?
